Who Can Be Sponsored?

Under the Family Class sponsorship program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor a spouse, a common-law partner, or a conjugal partner for permanent residency in Canada.

Who Can Sponsor?

To sponsor a spouse or partner, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, be at least 18 years old, live in Canada, and meet financial and legal eligibility requirements.

The Two Application Streams

Inland Sponsorship

If your spouse or common-law partner is already living in Canada on a valid status, you may apply through the inland stream. Your partner may also apply for an open work permit at the same time.

Outland Sponsorship

If your spouse or partner is outside Canada, you apply through the outland stream. Your partner can continue living in their home country while the application is processed.

Required Documents

Spousal sponsorship requires extensive documentation including proof of citizenship or PR status, proof of identity, relationship evidence such as photos and communication records, and police certificates and medical exams for the sponsored person.

Processing Times in 2026

Both the inland and outland streams typically take approximately 12 to 18 months for the full permanent residency process. Complex files may take significantly longer.

Common Reasons for Refusal

The most common reasons for spousal sponsorship refusals include insufficient relationship evidence, misrepresentation, sponsor ineligibility, inadmissibility of the sponsored person, and prior deportation or removal orders.

Why Legal Representation Matters

A lawyer can review your file for weaknesses, guide you on relationship evidence, draft a relationship narrative letter, and handle appeals if the application is refused. At Ellan Law Corporation, we have guided many families through this process.
